Recent excavations in North Yorkshire have uncovered two massive deposits of destroyed metalwork buried by communities in Late Iron Age Britain. The assemblages contain what appears to be the first known physical remains of four-wheeled wagons in the region. Dating to the first century BC or early first century AD, the find includes nearly a thousand pieces of horse harnesses, vehicle parts, and feasting vessels. The study was published in the journal Antiquity.
During the Late Iron Age, the region of modern-day Yorkshire was inhabited by a powerful confederacy of communities known as the Brigantes. They occupied an intensely utilized landscape of field systems, roundhouses, and ancient trackways. This specific area sat less than a kilometer from a major political center known as the Stanwick complex. The Stanwick site acted as a regional hub that maintained political and trade connections with the expanding Roman Empire.
A persistent gap in the history of British wheeled transport centers on the types of vehicles these regional communities used. Physical evidence of wheeled transit from Iron Age Britain had mostly been limited to lightweight, two-wheeled chariots deposited in earlier centuries. Four-wheeled flat-bed wagons were a characteristic feature of Iron Age cultures in continental Europe. Finding similar heavy transport vehicles in Britain has remained elusive. Furthermore, tracking how elite individuals displayed their status during this era relies heavily on analyzing the concentrated material wealth they left behind in the soil.
British Museum specialist Sophia Adams and a team of researchers from Durham University and the University of Bristol conducted the excavation and analysis. The group included Jamie Armstrong, Alex Bayliss, Tom Moore, and Emily Williams. The excavation focused on twin deposits, named Hoard 1 and Hoard 2, located at the bottom of ancient enclosure ditches near the village of Melsonby. The site was initially identified by a metal detectorist surveying the farmland. Field researchers recovered Hoard 1 on-site, manually excavating hundreds of entangled metal items from the soil.
Hoard 2 presented a different physical challenge. The artifacts had corroded into a dense mass encased in solid iron concretion. The team excavated Hoard 2 as a single block measuring roughly one meter wide and brought it to a laboratory. They then utilized computed tomography, or CT scanning, at the University of Southampton. This non-destructive x-ray technique allowed the technicians to map the objects trapped inside the solid block without breaking it apart. To establish a timeline, the researchers analyzed three short-lived organic samples using radiocarbon dating.
The excavated material reveals an unprecedented scale of vehicle destruction in ancient Britain. The Hoard 1 deposit yielded 28 bent iron tires that had once wrapped around wooden wheels spanning up to a meter in diameter. The team recovered U-shaped iron brackets and cylindrical metal bands alongside the tires. The researchers also identified iron kingpins, which are central pivot elements required to steer a four-wheeled wagon by turning the front axle independently of the main carriage.
These specific iron components match the steering mechanisms and hub collars used on heavy, four-wheeled wagons from continental Europe. The parts do not correspond to the structural design of lighter, two-wheeled carts. The sheer volume of matching and paired harness elements suggests the deposits contain the remains of at least seven separate wagons. The people who buried this material intentionally dismantled and destroyed the vehicles before deposition.
The iron tires were bent out of shape, and large boulders were thrown onto the piled metalwork in the trench. Some pieces of copper alloy, silver, and glass show signs of partial melting, indicating they were exposed to intense heat prior to burial. The lack of charcoal and burned soil in the ditch itself suggests the burning took place elsewhere before the items were gathered and buried.
The assemblages also include artifacts linked to high-status feasting and personal display. The team identified a massive iron mirror and specialized horse bits decorated with imported Mediterranean coral. One massive bronze cauldron features rare decorative metalwork shaped by hammering from the inside out to depict swimming fish in low relief. Hoard 2 included iron spearheads laid at the bottom of the bundle and a possible iron pilum shaft threaded through hollow copper-alloy tubes.
The orchestrated destruction of functional, decorated vehicles and feasting equipment points to a significant event of conspicuous consumption. The deposits might represent a highly charged community ritual or a funerary event where material wealth was placed on an unrecovered ceremonial pyre. The abundance of imported styles and Roman-influenced items reflects a sophisticated society capable of commanding vast resources. The scale of the metalwork positions the regional leaders of the Brigantes on par with the material wealth of elites across the English Channel.
Investigating these metalwork clusters presents significant preservation challenges. The intense iron corrosion binding Hoard 2 prevents researchers from physically untangling the items inside the block. Attempting to disassemble the mass would likely destroy the metal artifacts and erase the surviving mineralized traces of textiles that once wrapped the bundle. As a result, the identification of some iron components relies heavily on structural comparisons with better-preserved European finds.
The exact chronological placement is currently based on a small sample size of three radiocarbon dates. The dates suggest a burial event just prior to the Roman conquest in AD 43, but a slightly later timeline remains a statistical possibility. It remains unclear if this event was directly tied to the ancestors of Cartimandua, the well-documented queen of the Brigantes during the Roman era. Expanded radiocarbon testing on the ditch sediments is currently underway to refine the burial timeline and clarify the sequence of events at Melsonby.
